Modern/Lyrical
Born in the early 20th century, modern dance is a dance style that centres on a dancers own interpretations instead of structured steps. Modern dance encourages dancers to use their emotions and moods to design their own steps and routines. Martha Graham, considered to be the pioneer of the movement concentrated on movements of contraction and release. Instead of striving for long, fluid movements, Graham's movements were sharp and jagged.
Lyrical dance is a modern dance form which fuses modern dance, jazz, and ballet. Lyrical dance is often referred to as contemporary dance. The goal of a lyrical dancer is to convey the emotion of a songs lyrics. Intense emotional expression of the face and body are necessary to tell a story that evolves along the lines of the song to which lyrical dance is performed.
